Personal History | Thomas was born in early 2362 on Betazed to Lokar and Tahre Rolands. His early childhood could be considered better than average, as his parents took every advantage to dote upon their son. Lokar was a respectable member of the local government and his mother was a schoolteacher. For the most part, his childhood was uneventful until he reached the age of 13. In 2375, his parents volunteered to be part of the first wave of colonists bound for Talaris IV. En route, their transport was ambushed by Cardassians. Taking heavy damage, the transport was left drifting in space. Hours later, the Thunderchild arrived in response to the transport's distress call. The away team included the ship's XO, Chief of Security, and the then Lt. JG Lorian Tharos. Lorian was the first to notice the boy's hand sticking out of the wreckage that had buried him. He started tossing the rubble aside but soon found that the boy was trapped under a metal beam. It took all three of the away team members to lift the beam and allow Thomas to crawl out. They returned to the Thunderchild where the doctor treated Thomas' injuries. When it was learned that Thomas' parents had been killed, Lorian decided to take the boy in. A few months later, he was granted legal custody as Thomas' guardian. There had never been a better pair. Thomas' thirst for knowledge was a perfect match for the years of experience and teachings that Lorian had to offer. He instructed the boy in various cultures, starship operations, history, and many other topics. Soon, Thomas had learned enough that the captain decided to grant him access to various areas of the ship and gave him permission to help out in the various departments with standard starship operations. All this helped to prepare him to enter Starfleet when he was older. When Thomas' telepathic and empathic abilities began to assert themselves, Lorian was instrumental in helping the young Betazoid in quieting his mind and tuning out the 'noise' that was commonplace amongst beings. Wherever Lorian was transfered, he always brought Thomas with him. When he was old enough, Thomas applied for entry into Starfleet Academy. He was accepted and departed for Earth around the same time Lorian received a promotion to XO of the USS Avenger. Thomas immediately caught the attention of his instructors as he swiftly rose to the top of his class. It looked like nothing could hold the boy back until he reached his junior year. On his cadet tour aboard the USS Repulse, he was seriously injured while bypassing a strained power junction during a battle with Orion Pirates. Though the doctor did everything he could, Thomas still required several months of rehabilitation. Lorian accepted a posting as an instructor at Starfleet Academy to help care for Thomas during his recuperation. Against Lorian's advice, Thomas continued with his studies while still putting every effort into his rehabilitation. Much to everyone's surprise, Thomas not only completed his rehab, but he managed to finish all his studies and graduate with the rest of his class, earning top honors. He received his first posting as a member of the engineering team aboard the USS Montgomery. While there, he saved the ship after an encounter with a space dwelling being that threatened to destroy the Montgomery. His quick thinking helped to make the ship less desireable and they were able to break free and escape before the creature could realize what was happening. After serving aboard the Montgomery for four years, he was transferred to the USS Frontier as Assistant Chief Engineering Officer under Lt. JG Jacob Warrington. Thomas continued to serve as the Frontier's assistant chief engineer through mid-2386. When Lieutenant Warrington made the difficult decision to leave the USS Frontier, Thomas chose to follow. He had decided that he would accompany his friend and superior officer to whatever assignment they would find themselves in. The two engineers disembarked from the Frontier at Starbase 214, having concluded their tour of duty there. A few days later, they received orders to report to Deep Space Four, where Lieutenant Warrington would rendezvous with the starship USS Pandora to assume the role of Interim Chief Engineer. Lieutenant Warrington accepted the position, offering Thomas the position of Interim Assistant Chief Engineer. |
