Personality & Traits

General Overview Matt has been described by some as quiet and withdrawn, but this is only when he feels he is inadequately educated in the topic at hand. With those he considers friends, or when speaking on a topic with which he is comfortable, he quickly gains his voice.
Strengths & Weaknesses Matt possesses a keen and quick mind, allowing him to analyze a situation faster than most and come up with possible options to the situation. He is also able to remember important facts, even if only briefly exposed to them.

Unfortunately, Matt has been noted as a day dreamer, often failing to pay attention to crucial information. At times it almost seems like he's in a trance, unable to awake without the physical intervention of another.
Ambitions As a child, Matt dreamed of sailing the stars, learning all there is to learn about the universe. Now that he has achieved that dream, he wants to someday be recognized as one of the Federations top scientists.

Matt has, in his off time, worked to find viable alternatives to matter/anti-matter based engines, which have been shown to be hazardous to the space/sub-space barrier. While he knows the solution is a long way off, he plugs along, hoping for a breakthrough
Hobbies & Interests When given the opportunity, Matt likes to travel to the beaches of the Universe. When he isn't, he likes to recreate beaches he's already been to on the holodeck. To date, Matt has visited over forty beaches on planets both within the Federation and outside of its boarders.
The interest in beaches stretches farther than tourism, however. As a scientist, Matt likes to observe the native ocean-dwelling animals of different planets and look at the evolutionary differences between planets.

Personal History Matt was born in a small suburb in south-central Wisconsin on July 13th, 2362 to George and Jane Lessly. His father was a woodworker, creating hand-crafted furniture, eventually creating furniture for top Federation officials. His mother was a chef at a local restaurant. Both his mother and his father believed that technology had damaged the human spirit and thus would not hear of using advanced technology when they could do a job themselves by hand.

Roughly two years after Matt was born, his mother gave birth to a daughter, named Elizabeth. Matt and Elizabeth grew up together as close as two siblings could be. Elizabeth, much to the thrill of her parents, took to artistry and gained access to the Gregor Academy for Young Artists at the age of thirteen. Matt, on the other hand, showed an affinity for science from an early age. Since his parents had sworn off any technology, Matt spent much of his time at school studying in the library. Despite being separated by schools, Matt and Elizabeth's relationship continued to thrive.

When Matt was sixteen, he came out to his friends and family as gay. The majority of his friends, as well as Elizabeth, were very accepting of him. His parents, however, were less than pleased. While the vast majority of people in the 24th century had come to accept homosexuality as natural, there were still a small number of people that were prejudiced against homosexuals.

Having been kicked out of his house by unaccepting parents, Matt took a transport to San Francisco where he hoped to finish his secondary education and gain admission to Starfleet Academy. If he were to fail his entrance exams, he planned to move to Denobula to study under scientists there. His backup plan proved unneeded though when, in 2381, he was accepted into Starfleet Academy.

Matt went through the academy as many cadets did, not leading the class, but far from the bottom. While his parents wanted nothing to do with him, Elizabeth kept in touch with him by using a video communicator she had salvaged from the schools recycle bin. Towards the end of his freshman year at the academy, he narrowed his field of study and specialized in astrometric sciences while taking classes in several other scientific fields as well. During his sophomore year, Matt found that he also enjoyed tinkering with things, particularly his tricorders.

During the break between his sophomore and junior year, while most cadets were visiting parents for the first time since entering the academy, Matt took the extra free time to make contact with several engineering professors and began learning about engineering, one tid-bit at a time. His junior year flew by for Matt, with very few interruptions. The first semester of his senior year was spent conducting experiments and polishing his thesis paper for review by the science council.

Being one of the few astromtric science specialists in his class, Matt spent his field assignment on Neptune base, making calculations for planetary shifts and creating simulations for what the formation of the galaxy would be thousands of years in the future. After the completion of his field assignment, Matt returned to Earth and graduated in the top third of his class. While he was less than thrilled with his placement, he took solace in a fact pointed out to him by one of his professors, the fact that most of his academy class would have flunked out had they been taking his course load.

After graduation, Matt was selected to study a part of space just outside Federation space, but near Cardassian space. Starfleet had been monitoring abnormal spacial distortions in the region and had selected Matt to study the region before being sent out as a mission specialist to investigate. After several months of studying, Matt was dispatched to the USS Frontier under the command of Captain Mordred Ocal to investigate. The abnormal signals turned out to be a small fleet of dominion ships that had gone dormant before the end of the Dominion War.

It was on the Frontier that Matt met Lieutenant John Forest, the Chief Flight Control Officer of the Frontier. Several weeks after coming aboard, Matt was slightly surprised when John asked him to go on a date with him. The two quickly connected and Matt found himself in his first real relationship.

After several months of serving together and being in a relationship, both John and Matt took leaves of absence and went on vacation to Risa. Unfortunately, Starfleet had decided that Matt was no longer needed on the Frontier and it was time for John to take a new assignment. Matt was transfered to a science facility on the outer edge of Federation space and John was transfered to the San Francisco shipyards as the dock master. Both were happy with the assignment, but sorry to be taken away from each other.

After just under a year at the research center, Matt requested a transfer to a starship. If he wasn't able to be with John, he at least wanted to be on a starship, traveling through the galaxy. Fortunately for Matt, the USS Pandora had space available for a science officer, resulting in a quick transfer to the Luna-class starship.
