Her shift over, Awen had retreated to her quarters, not bothering with dinner. With everything that had happened, she wasn't very hungry. Awen moved towards her desk and stared at the blank console screen for a few minutes, debating.
Eventually, she decided to simply go ahead and try contacting her family. Awen did check in with them, but not very often. After leaving home to join the Resistance with her brother, she had been back to the family home only a handful of times. The burden of her older brother's death still weighed heavily upon her, even though it had been over fifteen years prior. The images simply could not be cleared from her head. However, Awen had spared her family from it - instead simply telling them that he had been killed in a skirmish with some Cardassians.
In reality, nobody knew the full truth about Jorak's (NPC) death except for her and the Cardassians who had come after them during their escape.
The Bajoran turned on her console and sent out the comm link. A few moments later, her younger brother, Nolis (NPC), appeared on the screen.
"Awen! How are you? We haven't heard from you for....a long time," he said.
Awen nodded, "I know, Nolis. You know how busy life in StarFleet can get."
Nolis raised an eyebrow, "Technically, no, I don't. Haven't you gotten any shoreleave time? Mother and father would like to see you, you know...as would your nieces and nephew."
"It's not as easy as you make it sound, Nolis. How is everyone?" She tried changing the subject slightly. Partly, Awen did feel bad about not keeping in closer contact with her family, but it was also difficult to speak with them, knowing that they didn't realize the full truth.
He hesitated, seemingly debating whether it would be worth it to try to get more information out of her. "Mother and father are doing well; keeping fairly busy and watching the children as well. Silna (NPC) and I are expecting again, so she's mostly been taking things easy."
"Congratulations, little brother, I'm sure you're thrilled," Awen smiled. "Will I have another niece, or another nephew?"
"Actually, one of each," Nolis replied with a grin. "We're excited. You should really come to visit... The kids miss seeing their aunt. Besides, you know all the best hiding places; Rol (NPC) keeps asking me to show him more."
Nodding, Awen said, "I'll see what I can do... I just don't know when exactly I'd have enough time to come back for more than a very brief visit."
Nolis frowned slightly, "You should make the time, Awen. Bajor is your home, even if you don't like being here...and we're your family."
"I know, I know," she replied. "It's not that I don't like being there. It's...complicated, Nolis."
"It always is." Deciding to drop the idea for now, Nolis asked, "So what ship are you on now? It doesn't seem to be the same one..."
"No, it's not. I was transferred to the Tethys, and then shortly thereafter the crew was transferred over to the USS Pandora, Luna Class," Awen informed him. "This was actually our first full mission aboard the Pandora."
"And?" Nolis regarded her carefully, "How did it go?"
Awen looked at him and partly smirked, "You know I can't tell you that. We'll just say that things didn't quite turn out as planned. No casualties, though. Anyway, I should be going; I just wanted to check in. Take care, Nolis, and tell everyone I said hello."
Nolis sighed, "You should really do that yourself...But I'll do it, this time. Next time you need to talk to the others as well. May the Prophets watch over you, Awen."
"And you as well, little brother," she replied, giving him a final nod before closing the channel. The Bajoran leaned back into her chair. The truth was, she did miss them quite a bit. Overall, she felt very alone - working hard helped take her mind off of things, but the burden was still there, buried deep. Something that would be with her always.
