Not So Very Long Ago

Mission: Episode 1.3 - "The Time of Trial"
Location: Nezar's Quarters
Timeline: MD 6, 0230

The crew's mood had permeated Myrin's (PNPC) thoughts with a piercing insistance that he rarely felt. He was a lucky man and not one to dwell on injustice, in two lifetimes he had learned that lesson well, it was simply not worth it. This was somehow different, this discontent, this impotent frustration that had been resting over the ship ever since they had left Romulan space and it sank into Myrin's chest and weighed on his very nerves. The Nezar symbiote shifted in his belly and Myrin moved with it, turning to one side and closing his eyes with determination-now! Now the sleep would come. But his body ached with unspent energy, with the very frustration that had been poured into him that day and although his mind longed for sleep his limbs refused to give in.

Or partially refused. If he could have realised that he was dosing, he would have been relieved but his semi-conscious mind was already shifting away. Shifting but not quite gone in that compromise that exists between exhaustion and true rest. He could feel the bed, the sheets and Nezar inside him even as he could see the brilliant light of a distant sun as it sank into the distant earth. In his mind his eyes were open and the fabric beneath his fingertips was water. Soft and sweet water that he raised to his lips to drink. It tasted stale, not at all as he remembered it and when he looked down it was that long distant but still lagging image of Nali Nezar whose forehead creased back at him.

His conscious eyebrows strained together in the half-conscious revulation of what was about to come. He turned, the bed cradling him in the subconscious even as his mind strained against it. Myrin sunk back into his pillow and his memory. The older face, lines clogged with dust and memory turned and he stared out over the ruins that were wholly hers. On this planet, far from anyone but her handful of assistants Nali Nezar watched the twin suns swim towards the horizon. The air was orange and the taste was sweet with history as she took the first step towards the ruins.

Consciously, Nezar counted. He knew the number well and felt the Nezar symbiote shift again, it's own consciousness trailing along, leading along, by this point Myrin wasn't sure which it was. One step and the sun glints off her husband's glasses where he's raised them to see more clearly. Two steps and two assistants call to one another. Three steps and a bird shoots into the air even as he feels the ground beneath her slip and Myrin's eyes open onto reality. It's always the same. Now struggling to bring his breathing back to steady somewhere in his memory Myrin can feel her broken body as it hits the ground. He shivers into the silence.
