Poseidon's Trident

Mission: Episode 2.1 - "Unanswered Questions"

"AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH!" Matt yelled, slamming his sword down into the over-sized doberman. The beast, which Matt later found out was known as a hellhound, had appeared just moments after he had fended off the entire Ares cabin, allowing his team to win their game of capture the flag, Greek warrior edition.

Breathing heavily to catch his breath, Matt looked down only to realize that he was standing in the middle of the creek that ran through the middle of the woods. As he began to make his way out of the water, he noticed that no one seemed to be speaking, but everyone was looking up into the air just above his head. Looking up himself, he suddenly became aware of a green, semitransparent symbol that was hanging above him: a trident, the symbol of Poseidon.

"Matt!" Annabeth exclaimed, Matt had reprogrammed the program so that the characters called him by his real name and not the name of the main character. "Do you know what that is?"

Matt studied the rapidly fading symbol and shrugged his shoulders.

"Poseidon has claimed you, Matt." Chiron inserted before Annabeth had the chance. "Your father... is Poseidon."

Matt sat on the beach that was along the edge of Camp Half-blood. It had been over an hour since the events at the creek and he was starting to realize why John (NPC) had given him the program. It kind of made sense, in John's outside-the-box way.

"Mind if I join you, seaweed brain?" someone asked from behind him.

Turning, Matt saw that it was Annabeth. He smiled slightly and patted the lightly colored sand next to him. "Of course not."

"Quite a day." Annabeth said, sitting down next to Matt.

"Heh." Matt laughed. "At least it all makes sense now."

"What does?" Annabeth asked, confused.

"When I was sixte-" Matt began, but then remembered that the character was only twelve at this point in the program, he corrected himself. "When I was younger, I had to leave the home I'd known all my life. I ran away to the west coast and found myself living near the ocean."

Annabeth nodded and listened as Matt told his story.

"While I was there, I found refuge at the beach. The view and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was the most soothing sound I had ever heard. I remember spending nearly every spare moment I had sitting on the beach." Matt continued. "It was the only place in the world where I felt like I didn't have to hide, where nothing that had happened before could hurt me and that I would be okay."

Annabeth smiled and put an arm around Matt. "Maybe it was your dad, telling you that everything would be okay."

Matt smiled and stared out into the ocean. John had known how Matt felt about the ocean, and there was little doubt in his mind that John chose the program specifically because of that."
