Episode 1.2 - "A House Divided"
Location: Auxiliary Sickbay, USS Pandora
Timeline: MD06, 1820
ON: [[Auxiliary Sickbay, USS Pandora, MD06, 1820]]
Margaret sat at her desk which was, compared to her old one, quite a bit larger. Having finally gotten settled in after several days on the Pandora she was leaning back, taking in the new office which came with being on a larger ship. *And they've got a much nicer surgery bay than the Tethys.* she thought, smiling.
The lift slowed to a halt and the doors hissed open to allow Sonya (NPC) to disembark. She took a few steps forward until she reached a junction. Pausing, she looked each direction before deciding on the left-hand corridor. Sonya took off on that direction, stepping to one side so that she wouldn't run into those heading the opposite way.
Smiling to a few crewmembers that she passed in the corridor, she eventually reached the door marked Auxiliary Sickbay. Having reached her intended destination, she stepped toward the door, causing it to slide open at her approach. Sonya crossed the threshold into the relatively quiet room and took a look around in hopes of locating one of the medical staff.
Hearing the doors hiss open, Margaret got up from her seat, grabbed her tricorder and walked out into the main treatment center. Seeing the young officer looking around Margaret smiled and walked up to her. "Hello there Ensign, what brings you in today?"
"Oh," Sonya said, slightly surprised by the sound of the doctor's voice from behind, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt anything. It's just that, well, I was told that I'm due for my routine physical and I figured that, since we didn't have much going on right now, this would be as good a time as any. That is...if this is a good time. Is it a good time? I can always come back later if..."
Margaret smiled, chuckling slightly, and shook her head. "Oh no, no, now's great actually. I haven't had too many people in today so I'm finally caught up on paperwork." she said as she made her way towards the biobed. "Go ahead and have a seat." she added as she patted the soft top of the bed and activated the bed monitors.
Sonya took a seat where the doctor had indicated and looked around briefly before allowing her attention to focus on Winchester. This wasn't going to take much time for either of them, but it was another thing that Sonya would be able to check off for the day. Maybe later, she might find some free time to slip away to the holodeck or, even better, the arboretum.
Margaret flipped open the tricorder and began sweeping Sonya with the medical attachment. After a few moments of scanning and a few "hmm"s, Margaret closed her tricorder and looked at the young officer.
Margaret bit her lip quickly before asking, "Ensign, how long did you say it had been since your last physical?"
"A couple months, give or take a day or two," Sonya said with a look of confusion on her face. The tone in Winchester's voice seemed to imply that there was something out of the ordinary, but Sonya had no idea what it could have been. As far as she remembered, there hadn't been anything abnormal during her last physical. She looked at the doctor and asked, "Is there something wrong?"
"It's nothing to be worried about." Margaret began, wanting to assure Sonya. "There appear to be some abnormal masses in your liver. I can't tell for sure but based on the size and fact that I can't accurately scan them, I'd say you've got a case of Kriosian liver-mites."
Sonya frowned. She had never heard of Kriosian liver-mites before and had no idea what they were. From the sound of it though, they weren't something that she wanted inside of her. "Where did they come from," she asked. Was it something she had picked up on an away mission? Something she ate? All these questions swirled around in her head. She'd always done her best, especially considering her line of work, to adhere to all containment protocols.
"You probably got them from eating something that wasn't cooked correctly. More than likely it was during a shore leave because Starfleet requires the quartermasters to scan any food products for these kinds of things." Margaret replied.
"Oh," Sonya said, lowering her head. She wracked her brain, trying to recall what recent away missions she had participated in and whether or not she had ingested anything during any of them. It wasn't as easy to do as it sounded and, for the moment, she was coming up blank. As soon as she was finished here, she'd have to look into the ship's database to see if the answers she sought were there.
"I'll just need to perform a simple procedure to remove them." Margaret responded, checking her calendar. "I've got time tomorrow to do it. If you're ok with that, I'll contact your department head and tell them you'll be out for a day or two."
Nodding slowly, Sonya sighed heavily and looked toward the doctor again. "That should be fine, I guess," she replied, "We're not really doing all that much until we reach the Neutral Zone anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem." She was still a little worried about what these mites were, but from what Winchester was saying, they weren't supposed to be that bad. A little personal research later might assuage her anxiety a little better. However, she'd be glad once the procedure was done and over with.
Margaret smiled, glad that the Ensign seemed to be taking it well after the initial shock. "I'll see you tomorrow then. 1000 hours." she said as she tapped the biobed controls, sending their readings to her office computer for study.
"Thank you, doctor," Sonya replied, sliding off the bio bed. She paused for only a moment to be sure that they were completed, then started for the door. There was still plenty of time between now and then to get in some of her own personal research. On the bright side...it gave her something to do.
