"There he is," McCabe said softly.
Bishop nodded thoughtfully. "Alright I'll look into it. Thanks for letting me know."
"No worries Cassanova," McCabe said with a grin, safely out of arm's reach.
Bishop sighed. "Remind me to beat you later," he grumbled, moving toward his Assistant Chief. "How are we doing?"
Looking up from the pool table display, Svon saw the chief engineer moving in his direction. It took him a moment to realize that the man had been addressing him as opposed to one of the other engineering personnel. "There was a slight fluctuation in a secondary EPS conduit on deck six, but I think we've managed to track it to a faulty sensor," Svon replied, looking back down at the console and tapping one of the controls to adjust the display, "Nothing too serious."
The Chief nodded thoughtfully with pursed lips. After a lengthy pause, he tried to smile reassuringly, deciding that the best way around, was through. "Is everything ok with you mister? I don't mean to pry, but people have been noticing that you've seemed 'on edge' lately, and I want to make sure everything's ok," he said, leaning on the pool table in a manner that signaled to anyone nearby that this was a private conversation. The immediate area slowly began to clear of personnel as people gave the Chief some privacy. Inwardly, Bishop smiled at the almost psychic link he had with his team.
"I'm not sure what you mean, chief," Svon said, looking from the display to the PADD in his hand. He paused to glance toward the man across from him, trying to see just how serious the chief was about getting an answer. With Lieutenant Bishop, it was difficult to tell.
Bishop sighed heavily. "What I mean is that ever since we've crossed the border, you've seemed distracted. Frankly I think this whole idea of dancing around in Romulan space is insane, but... well... no one asked me. In the meantime, I need to know that my team is at a hundred percent. I know I said I didn't mean to pry, and I don't, but as the Chief Engineer on this boat, I need to know if one of my people is having a problem." His voice suddenly became soft, almost gentle. "So I can help if possible."
Svon didn't think he had been that distracted...at least, not from his duties. Sure, he hadn't been spending quite as much time in the lounge or the rec areas when he was off duty, but that shouldn't have been enough to "concern" people. He didn't say anything as he looked down toward the tabletop and tapped in another sequence. The diagnostic checked out with all systems green, which meant that he could check another thing off his list. He knew the chief was still waiting for some kind of explanation, but Svon wasn't sure if he was ready to give one just yet. There were so many things at stake if he were to tell anyone, even in the utmost confidence.
The Chief waited, his irritation at being ignored kept in check by the knowledge that he had no right to force anything out of the young man. Finally he rose from where he had been leaning against the table. "Alright, well if you change your mind, you know where to find me," Bishop said finally, his disappointment clear in his tone. Turning his back on the young man, he started to walk away, but stopped. "Oh by the way, I'm assuming your diagnostic will include an accurate count of the number of atoms in that console, judging by how hard you're staring at it." It had been meant as a joke, but as it came out of his mouth, the joke fell flat.
Frowning, Svon looked from the chief to the PADD in his own hand, and then to the surface of the console. He raised an eyebrow in Vulcan fashion at the perplexity of the situation, hoping that it would be a sufficient response to the chief's humor.
Bishop chuckled, but there was no humour in it. "Forget it," he muttered dismissively. "Wasn't that funny anyway." As he walked away, the Engineer lamented for possibly the thousandth time how useless he was at dealing with people in situations like this.
As the chief moved to a different part of the bay, Svon took a moment to visually scan his surroundings, taking note of who was on duty in main engineering at the moment. Out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw McCabe working at a nearby engineering station. Once he had made the visual sweep, he turned his attention back to the pool table and wrapped up the project he had been working on.
As he moved across the deck, he saw McCabe opening his mouth to speak. "Not now McCabe," Bishop growled as he passed. He instantly regretted his tone, but shrugged it off all the same. Turning, he said to his friend, "I'll be in the lounge if you need me. Don't need me."
Rodney watched him go and wondered what had happened in his conversation with Svon. Sighing with the air of a man who realizes things are happening way above his pay grade, the young Engineer returned to his work.
