"These scans aren't making sense." Margaret thought out loud. Turning to the woman again, Margaret tried getting her to say something again. "You have to tell me what's happened or I won't be able to help him." she said, urgently.

Suddenly the woman stopped wailing and looked at Margaret. For a moment, Margaret thought she was about to say something, but before the womans mouth opened again, her eyes quivered and began to roll back into her head. Margaret, jumping over to where the woman had been kneeling, was able to catch her just before her unconscious body hit the hard ground.

"Commander!" Margaret called to Earlond, "I need to get these two people up to sickbay immediately!"

"Do it," Earlond said curtly with a nod. They would have to deal with the protocol of removing people from the colony at a later time - the situation was too urgent to stop and wait for permission from the admittedly apathetic governor.

Margaret nodded and tapped her comm badge. "Winchester to Pandora. Three to beam directly to sickbay, full decontamination protocols and activate level ten containment fields."

The doctor and her two patients vanished in the shimmering effect of the Pandora's transporters, leaving only bare ground in their place. As the effect dissipated, silence fell on the surrounding colonists. For a moment, no one moved or spoke a word. Then, as if a switch had been thrown, those who had been watching discretely promptly busied themselves with some activity. It was as life had gone back to 'normal', or whatever passed for 'normal' here.

=======================

"Come on, Doc...it's just one ride," Peter (NPC) said with a mischevious smile. Neither of them had forgotten the last time the good doctor had spent some quality time on the back of a horse. Still, Aris (NPC) had wanted to go and it was he who had suggested that they ask the doctor, which was why they were here in the first place.

"Doc" Haelen (NPC) collected the little containers he'd been working with and slipped them into their storage bin. "My derrier hurts again just thinking about it," he protested. "If we must ride something Animalia," he said, referring to the scientific classification of lifeforms, "why not a Betaziod ruff-cat, or a Tarkalean sheep? They're soft at least." He carried the bin into the storage room and slid it into its apportioned place.

"Never heard of them," Peter replied promptly, dismissing the suggestions, "Maybe if you tried riding bareback..." He glanced over his shoulder to see if Aris (NPC) would give him any support in trying to convince the doctor to join them on the holodeck.

"Why ride anything at all?" was Tony's rejoinder.

Peter threw up his arms in exasperation. He didn't seem to be getting anywhere with this. Turning, he gave Aris a look that said, You were the one who wanted to invite him...

"Doctor, I think..." Aris began, but he was interrupted by the musical tone of the transporter as three individuals began to materialize in middle of the room. As the effect of the transporter faded, Aris recognized Dr. Winchester among the three, but the other two were unfamiliar to him except for one defining feature...they were Romulan.

Haelen turned toward the group that had just materialized in his sickbay. He stepped towards them. "Doctor Winchester?" he said by way of greeting, and of query regarding the situation.

Margaret looked up at the holographic doctor from the female beside her and, getting the boy to a biobed, indicated for the Doctor to do the same with the woman. "Doctor," she said, skipping over the normal 'hello, how are you doing' and going straight to what needed both of their attentions. "Two settlers... we were just starting the tour when we came across them. The boy was already unconscious and the woman was delirious. I started scanning the boy and a few moments later she fell unconscious too."

Doctor Haelen motioned to Aris to stay back, but gave a nod to Peter directing him to take the woman's legs. Together they lifted her onto a second bed. "Initial findings from your scans?" he asked, positioning his patient and activating the bed.

Margaret shook her head as the hum of the emergency containment fields activated around the walls and doors of the sickbay. "Apart from the obvious malnutrition and dehydration, the tricorder readings weren't making sense. All I could find in the boy's system was a flu-like pathogen, but it wasn't anything that should have caused symptoms like this."

"Hmm," Haelen said by way of response. He began his own scan of the woman with a tricorder. Initial scans were confirming what he was seeing with his eyes... the dry, nonpliant skin and mucous membranes, the underdeveloped musculature giving a somewhat bony appearance, the brittle hair, all were signs of dehydration and prolonged malnutrition.

There was never a nurse around when you needed one. Tony pressed a panel near the biobeds and one soon appeared. "Nurse Caceres (NPC)," Tony said to the dark-haired man, "I need vascular access and infusion equipment for both of these patients. Begin fluid resuscitation with a two litre bolus on the female and a forty mililitre per kilogram bolus for the male; use an isotonic solution appropriate for Romulans. Also be ready for orders for a TPN series."

Nurse Caceres nodded and went to the supply room.

"So tell me more about what happened down there," Haelen said to Winchester. "Were their medical authorities notified?" He reconfigured his tricorder and began scanning for a metabolic panel.

"If they *had* medical authorities..." Margaret said, trailing off. "Their living conditions down there are deplorable. Honestly I'm surprised there's anyone alive down there to begin with."

Tony just shook his head. Nurse Caceres returned with the equipment and began assisting in the treatment of the two patients.

Peter (NPC) and Aris (NPC) had retreated to one corner of the room so that they would be out of the way as things begin to pick up in rapid pace. They watched, all thoughts of riding on the holodeck forgotten as the two doctors began to move back and forth in attempts to determine what was going on. As if suddenly pulled from his thoughts, Aris turned on his heel and abruptly left the room. The only thing Peter could do by sticking around would be to get in the way. He looked back one last time before following Aris out the door.
