Episode 2.2 - "Resistance"

Trace looked up from the PADD that he was reading as Lt. Alana entered the armory. He hadn't really had a chance to talk to him since coming aboard the Orlando but understood that he was the one that got the ship to launch a head of schedule, well him and his engineering team. He seemed to exhibit a calm poise that Trace was nowhere near achieving, at least not with the possibility that they might be facing the Borg.
"Good afternoon Mr. Vosh," Zekk smiled. Trace stood, trying to give a smile as well. Zekk noted an air of trepidation about him. Probably something to do with the fact that he was so young and already a department head.
Or it might have something to do with the fact that they were about to face off against the Borg.
"Good afternoon sir," Trace said, trying his best to smile. "I thought that we might go over our offensive capabilities, such as they are."
"Probably a good idea," Zekk said, taking a seat across from Trace at the work station. "You do know that you have an office, right?"
"I like it down here more," Trace shrugged. "Makes me feel more at home."
"Makes sense," Zekk nodded. "We've already got a few good ideas on our end about making us more defensible; however I will admit that I think we are lacking any real plan on finding a way to at least deter the Borg."
Trace nodded, although he didn't even know that it was possible to deter the Borg. Although Voyager seemed to manage just fine in dealing with them in the Delta Quadrant without any back up.
"I'm already having my staff tune all the hand phasers to rotating frequencies, the ship mounted weapons have been changed too...aside from that I'm not sure what else we can do."
"Are you alright ensign?" Zekk asked.
"Permission to speak freely sir?" Trace asked.
"By all means and stop calling me sir, Lt. Alana or Zekk will do just fine."
"Have you every faced the Borg?"
Zekk had a feeling that this question was coming.
"Yes Mr. Vosh, I have."
"And?"
"And what?" Zekk shrugged.
"None of my hosts ever have faced them," Trace said. "I haven't ever faced them."
"They are just another foe," Zekk said.
"But they aren't," Trace sighed.
He was feeling woefully inadequate in his current position. He had no idea how to take on the Borg...he was struck once again with how much better off Admiral Androski might have been had he actually gotten someone with a little more experience under his belt.
"Maybe Admiral Androski should have gotten someone better for this job."
Zekk quirked an eyebrow at that comment, he had seen this before. In fact, he had acted the same way right after they had given him his own AMAC squad; a feat that was generally reserved for people that were a lot older then he was. He had a hard time adjusting to it at first, in fact he vividly remembered that he even went to his CO and requested that they rethink their position.
That did not happen.
But he quickly learned that despite what he thought of his ability to lead, there was a reason that he had been placed in charge. Just like there was a reason that Quinn Androski had pick Vosh for his CT/SO.
"You have several lifetimes of experience to draw on," Zekk said, looking at Trace. "You have to remember that there was a reason that he choose you for this job, Borg or not."
Trace sighed heavily, he knew that Lt. Alana was doing and couldn't fault him for it. The man had a way about him that seemed to calm Trace down and there was a resonating sense of confidence behind the words he spoke.
"Mr. Vosh, you want to know what was one of the first things that we learned in AMAC training?" Zekk asked.
"Whats that sir?"
"That everything, everyone, every organization has a breaking point, a point that if you strike it just right it will shatter completely," Zekk said. "Sometimes that point is so large you could drive a starship through it, other times you need to strike like a surgeon. But everything has a breaking point and that means that the Borg do too. And we'll find that point and then strike at it with all the fury that we can muster and then some."
"You believe that sir?" Trace asked, feeling his anxiety level drop some more.
"I wouldn't be telling that if I didn't," Zekk said. "Look, the bottom line is that it doesn't matter if I think you can do it, it doesn't matter if Admiral Androski thinks you can do it, it only matters if YOU think you can do it."
Trace thought about that for a moment. He wasn't sure that he was worthy of all this confidence that everyone seemed to be bestowing on him but had a feeling that if he tried any more his self doubt Lt. Alana might be putting him in a headlock.
"I'll do my best," Trace said.
"That's all any of us can do," Zekk smiled. "Now, lets see what sort of trouble we can drum up for the Borg."
