Mission:
Episode 2.2 - "Resistance"
Location: Marine Barracks, USS Orlando
Timeline: MD-03, 1327 hours
ON: <
=^=Admiral, can I see you in the Marine barracks it's about our options for dealing with the Borg.=^=
Walking down the corridor towards his quarters, where he hoped to find Jaden, Quinn stopped in his tracks as the comm message came over his comm badge. Tapping it quickly, he responded, "I'll be down in a few minutes, Lieutenant."
<<1340 hours>>
"Admiral on deck," a Marine Sergeant shouted as he caught sight of Androski making his way into the barracks, the frenzy of activity slammed to a halt as the Marines braced to ridgid attention.
Quinn jumped slightly. "As you were." he ordered, looking around. "Where would Lieutenant Jackson be?"
"In his office, sir," the Sergeant replied pointing to a door on the left before carrying on with checking his combat gear.
Quinn nodded to the sergeant and made his way towards the MCO's office. Seeing that the door was propped open, he figured that was an open invitation and walked in.
Greg glanced up as the Admiral entered, "Glad you could make it sir, I've been on the long range comms with Marine HQ and they gave me a download of everything they have on the Borg." He waved to the chair in front of his desk, "Even with phaser modulation, the Borg can still adapt to our phaser's and assuming you don't want my Marines to deploy heavy weapon we only have a few options to reduce the number of casualties."
Quinn nodded as he took a seat. "The Borg have proven rather difficult to fight." he agreed. "I don't know what conditions we'll be engaging them in, if we engage them at all, but you're right. I don't want heavy weaponry deployed for use on board unless we run out of other options."
Greg nodded his head, "Then I would start by issuing our photon rifles, and grenades, we typically only use them in war time, but the Borg haven't been able to adapt. The downside is that neither the weapons nor the ammo can be replicated aboard ship. I only have five of the rifles aboard and enough grenades for each Marine to be issued with four."
Quinn nodded. "We'll have to make due." he responded. "What else are you thinking?"
Greg paused before pushing a datapad over to the Admiral, "On their is what I'm beginning to think is our best option the replicator pattern for a TR-116 rifle."
Picking the PADD up from the desk, Quinn glanced through the contents. "Solid projectiles have shown some promise in combating the Borg." he agreed. "I'll approve you to replicate some. They take up a lot of energy and replicator material though, so you won't be able to get many of them."
"I was hoping for an even fourty, the downside is the ammo. It'll take down the Borg, but it will also go through our standard issue body armor, it's not designed to stand up to solid projectiles." Greg said as he leaned back and ran his hands through his hair. "I understand it's on the back burner in some R&D lab, I was also hoping to be able to modify an older style of body armor to augment the armor we have."
"But that would only be needed if your teams are assimilated," Quinn responded, "and if that happens, armor is the least of our worries."
"True, but I was concerned about accidental blue on blue fire," Greg replied honestly, "We would like to catch any boarding force in a crossfire, and solid rounds tend to bounce off of corridors and bulkheads."
Quinn considered the marine's argument for a few moments. On the one hand, replicating that much material would put further strain on the industrial replicators but, on the other, he had a point. Nodding, he finally answered, "Alright. Replicate what you need."
"Thank you sir," Greg said with a nod of his head, "If we move to the deployment of the Marines, it's rather straight forward. Thirty Marines will be held in reserve to eliminate any Borg boarders once Security IDs their entry point. The other 15 Marines will be split into three groups, one will be assigned to the bridge, one to engineering, and the final one will be assigned to guard the civilians."
"Thank you for your concern about the bridge and engineering crews," Quinn began, "but I think the civilians on board could use the assistance more than the rest of us. What would your thoughts be on lowering the number of marines in engineering and on the bridge to two and having the other three from each position assist the civilian population?"
"From the bridge I could lower, but two Marines to cover Engineering would live them spread thiner then I would like," Greg replied after giving the Admiral's comments a few moments of thought. "Where do you plan on the civilians being during any action?"
Quinn nodded. "We don't have enough transport inhibitors to protect the entire ship, but I've ordered protection zones set up around cargo bay one for the civilians. You and your marines can work on setting up defenses there if you wish."
"I'll send over some Marines to get started on that immediatly, the Borg won't be getting through to the civilians, sir," Greg said with a firm nod of his head.
"You and your men seem to be doing a good job preparing, Lieutenant. Keep it up." Quinn said as he stood and made his way towards the door.
"Aye, Aye, sir," Greg said as he stood up as well. He needed to get things rolling, "Sargeant-Major, get cracking on those rifles and armor shells, Katrina start fortifying cargo bay one, everyone else holodeck in five, I want another simm run."
